Syracuse University ~ Good Samaritan Foundation Community Partnership

In 2005 Syracuse University formed a community partnership with the Good Samaritan Foundation founded by former Redskins Art Monk (SU ’80), Charles Mann, Earnest Byner and Tim Johnson. The program provides after-school tutoring, leadership development, workplace readiness training and community service opportunities for nearly 50 students from Anacostia High School and the IDEA Public Charter School. More than 20 students who graduated from the program are attending college. SU is providing university and alumni resources to assist GSF in preparing youth for leadership in the community and the workplace.

Save the Date!

The Ninth Annual Art Monk and Charles Mann Celebrity Golf Tournament will be held Monday, September 8 at Raspberry Falls Golf Club in Leesburg, Virginia. The tournament is a major source of funding for the Good Samaritan Foundation, founded by Art, Charles, Earnest Byner, and Tim Johnson to reach and teach teenagers in the District of Columbia.

Want to play? Contact John Livingston at JLivingston@Manganaro.com or call 240-882-1398. A website for online registration with complete information on fees will be available later this month.

Want to volunteer? Call Mary Anagnost at 202-797-4678, e-mail maanagno@syr.edu. Or Carol Hurlburt at 703-264-9054, e-mail schurlburt@verizon.net. We need:

  • People to work on registration and operations the day of the tournament. Commitment for a full day is preferred, but volunteers could also work a half day shift, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Solicitors of donations for the silent auction and raffle which will be held in conjunction with the tournament.
  • Suggestions of potential sponsors
  • Ideas for promoting the tournament

The tournament will be a great opportunity to congratulate Art after his enshrinement in the NFL Hall of Fame and to support Good Samaritan Foundation.

If you have any questions about the program and how you can be involved, contact Mary Anagnost at Greenberg House, 202-797-4678, e-mail maanagno@syr.edu or Advisory Council Chair Carol Hurlburt at 703-264-9054 or e-mail schurlburt@verizon.net.
