Syracuse University Alumni Club of Washington, DC announces summer scholarship award recipients
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- May 30, 2020 --
For the 16th summer, the Syracuse University Alumni Club of Washington, DC is pleased to provide financial support through its summer scholarship fund to students who are interning in the Capitol region.

This year, due to social distancing measures in effect to protect public health, the alumni club suspended the requirement that an applicant’s summer 2020 internship take place in person in the DC area in order to be considered for funds.

“The majority of internships for our student applicants have gone virtual because of the pandemic. We realized we needed to adjust our approach to make our scholarship funds more accessible so that we can continue to provide help and support to students who need it,” Syracuse University Alumni Club of Washington, DC Co-Chair Jessica Kershaw ‘07 said. “This year, we are thrilled to have raised a historic level of funds from generous alumni, friends and other donors so that we can support all students who applied with an award at some level, no matter if their internship is physically here in DC or virtually-hosted out of the DC area.”

The 2020 scholarship recipients are:

  • Mackenzie Mertikas
  • Miguel Gomez
  • Ellie Bodker
  • Camryn Simon
  • Sofia Donolo
  • Benah Stiewing

The Syracuse University Alumni Club of Washington, DC launched the scholarship in 2005 and has awarded funds to dozens of students over the years, providing critical support to help offset the expenses associated with participating in internships in the DC area.

Fundraising for the scholarship happens throughout the year through individual donations, door prize ticket sales at football and basketball game watches, the holiday party silent auction and club ticket blocks for cultural and sporting events.

“Many small donations year-round add up to a significant impact for SU students who are looking to explore career paths and build their professional networks at organizations around DC,” Syracuse University Alumni Club of Washington, DC Co-Chair and Scholarship Committee Chair Lottie Watts ‘09 said. “We are thankful to everyone who helped us raise funds for our summer scholarship fund. Our ability to help students is possible only because of the generosity of Syracuse alumni and friends from around the DMV.”

You’re invited to meet our scholarship winners at an upcoming monthly Zoom meeting this summer. More details will be available on how to join these gatherings via the club Facebook page and Instagram.
